Every year on June 7, we mark World Food Safety Day, a global initiative led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The day serves as a powerful reminder that safe food is essential not just for health, but for sustainable development and economic growth.

This year’s theme, “Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected,” highlights the importance of being ready for food safety incidents—whether caused by accidents, contamination, or natural disasters. Strengthening food safety systems and emergency responses can protect communities and save lives.

From “farm to table” or “boat to throat”, everyone has a role to play. Farmers, fishermen, processors, vendors, and consumers must work together to uphold high standards of hygiene, handling, and storage. Governments, too, must ensure strong regulations, monitoring, and education to prevent foodborne illnesses.

Let’s take this day to raise awareness, advocate for better food practices, and celebrate the efforts of those who help make our food safe every day. Food safety is not a privilege—it is a shared responsibility and a basic human right.
