The grounds of Queen’s Park came alive with curiosity, creativity, and innovation as the Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI) proudly participated in the Ministry of Innovation, Industry, Science and Technology, Science and Technology Festival 2026 on Tuesday, 24th March. The event attracted a vibrant mix of students, educators, and innovators all united under the inspiring theme: “Innovating the Future – Science for Endless Possibilities.”
Amid the buzz of scientific discovery, BNSI stood out with its engaging and practical theme, “Build Ya House to Last.” This powerful message was designed to introduce patrons, especially young minds, to the importance of the Barbados National Standard BNS CRCP 10: Construction of Houses – Code of Practice, which guides the construction of safe, durable, and resilient homes.

At the heart of BNSI’s exhibit was an energetic and interactive presentation led by Mr. Jonathan Platt, Technical Officer. With enthusiasm and creativity, the BNSI’s team captured the attention of students by transforming complex construction concepts into fun, relatable lessons. Through demonstrations and hands-on engagement, students learned why building strong homes is more important than ever, particularly in the face of climate change, which increases the risk and severity of hurricanes and earthquakes in Barbados. Mr. Platt emphasized, “When we build smart and build strong, we’re not just putting up a house, we’re protecting lives and preparing for whatever nature may bring.”
The exhibit highlighted that standards are not just technical documents, they are essential tools that protect lives and improve everyday living. BNSI focused on introducing children to these concepts early as it helps them understand the role standards play in shaping the world around them, from the homes they live in to the safety of their communities.

One of the most exciting aspects for students was exploring the stages of house construction. From laying a solid foundation to installing the roof, children discovered how each step contributes to a home’s strength and longevity. They were also fascinated by how modern technology has transformed traditional building tools, making once laborious tasks more efficient, precise, and accessible.
By combining education with excitement, BNSI’s presence at the festival successfully planted seeds of awareness and responsibility in the next generation. The message was clear: building a safer, stronger future starts with knowledge and it’s never too early to begin.
Through initiatives like this, BNSI continues to champion the importance of standards, ensuring that the future of Barbados is not only innovative, but also resilient and secure.
