The Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI) plays a pivotal role as part of the shelter assessment team working alongside other ministry officials. Between 22nd January and 22nd February, 2025, BNSI assessed 54 buildings designated as Category 2 Emergency Shelters to ensure they meet minimum standards for the upcoming hurricane season.

Shelters are crucial for providing a safe haven for individuals and families during a disaster. They offer protection from high winds, flying debris, and other life-threatening hazards. With climate change leading to more frequent and intense storms, the importance of well-equipped shelters has never been greater.

BNSI’s annual shelter assessments, which alternate between Category 1 and Category 2 shelters, help guarantee that these vital facilities continue to meet safety criteria. The process also includes reviewing new shelters to ensure they are correctly categorized and equipped to handle emergencies.

The assessments take place well before the hurricane season begins, allowing ample time to compile reports and update the Department of Emergency Management’s Emergency Shelters booklet, which provides the public with important shelter information. The booklet serves as a key resource, ensuring that residents are well-informed about shelter locations and preparedness measures.

Why This Matters To You?

While BNSI and its partners are working to ensure that emergency shelters are ready, it is also important for you and your family to be prepared for the unexpected. Having a disaster preparedness plan in place, including knowing where your nearest shelter is, can significantly increase your safety in the event of a hurricane or other emergency.

This proactive effort to assess and update shelters underscores the importance of working together to protect the community. As we approach the 2025 hurricane season, BNSI remains committed to ensuring that Barbados is ready to face any challenge that comes its way.
